Fresh from our 2008 summer tour here are some thoughts on the Dune Manor Hotel -- very happy again with our stay!
For starters, they called us days in advance when the room we had requested from previous stays was conflicted and they had options to make us happy and things worked out well, probably even for the better. Given that no place guarantees you a specific room I thought this was very courteous.
Their rooms are still clean and bright although showing a little wear and tear especially in the bathrooms but nothing to complain about. Service and all of the people are great. One thing I probably mentioned before is that they have windows with screens facing the beach/balcony which are nice to leave open and let in the air and beach sounds.
The beach at this location is very good, not too crowded no real annoying people to deal with. Had a very friendly and helpful beach service girl at 29th street as well. I realize the Dunes Manor can’t take credit for this but it counts.
The Dunes Manor has several bars which are good for a casual drink or three. But there were no drunks or pains to deal with. Their Tiki bar serves decent lunch food, convenient and reasonable and has a friendly staff and happy crowd every day for a 2-5 happy hour. I still find this to be a very convenient location and no parking or traffic issues.
We didn't use either of the restaurants this year but they seemed to be doing a brisker business than I recall from previous years. The menus looked fine but we have so many restaurants to support already in OC! ;-)
Tea and crumpets every day! It sounds odd and corny but we enjoy it nonetheless. The piano players and sing-alongs in the lobby also seem a little corny but it’s fun to watch folks enjoy themselves in a nice throw-back way. They have friendly door men that open the doors as you come and go and speak politely and engage in conversation. Again you may say corny but it makes for a great stay.
I think the Dunes Manor is still an atypical OC hotel and certainly not for everyone but we love it and will be back next year.
